MIDDLETOWN – Sprouts Farmers Market, the natural and organic food grocer, will follow Target as a tenant of the new Northside Shopping Center in Middletown.
The Phoenix-based company told Delaware Business Times that it plans to open its second Delaware location by the second quarter of 2025. Developer Louis Ramunno told DBT that the store could open sooner though, if construction progresses faster.
“Sprouts is obviously a premier, national organic-oriented grocer. So, we’re really excited to have them in the mix,” he said.
Sprouts opened its first store in Delaware in 2020 adjacent to the Concord Mall near the Pennsylvania border off U.S. Route 202. The Middletown space would appear to be a slightly smaller footprint than the roughly 30,000-square-foot location opened there.
The announcement of Target’s arrival in the last year has driven interest from others to locate in the new shopping center. They would join a Dash-In gas station nearing an opening and an existing Popeye’s, Burger King and independent stores in a strip mall. Ramunno said that the three other inline retail locations with Target and Sprouts are already working through draft leases too.
“I can’t identify some of the other inline tenants just yet, but they’re all high-quality national brands,” he said.
While the rainy summer has delayed some progress on the new 147,000-square-foot anchor Target store, Ramunno said that a summer of 2024 opening is still possible. The company, which acquired the 13-acre parcel in January, expects to get its builder on-site by the end of August, he added.
Harkening to its farm-stand heritage, Sprouts features an open layout with fresh produce at the heart of the store and has a wide assortment of organic, plant-based and gluten-free foods.
The Phoenix-based company has about 380 locations in 23 states, although they are primarily located on the West Coast and in the Southwest. When it opened in Wilmington, it initially hired about 140 full- and part-time positions.
Sprouts has grown quickly in recent years as the demand for natural food grocers has increased, also leading to the growth of competing brands like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, of which the former has a store in nearby Glen Mills, Pa., and the latter has stores in north Wilmington and Christiana.
Neither have ventured to the booming Middletown market, but Weis Markets recently announced plans to open a 64,000-square-foot store just to the north near the Village of Bayberry community. Middletown already has a crowded grocery market with Walmart, Acme, Giant, Food Lion, Aldi and Lidl.

Bubbakoo's Burritos offers a variety of made-to-order Mexican-fusion items such as hibachi steak and shrimp, Nashville hot chicken and General Tso's chicken served as customized burritos, tacos, nachos, tostada salads or quesadillas.
The new restaurant is located behind the HomeGoods and Ashley Furniture Store and next to Tommy's Express Car Wash at Middletown Warwick and Bunker Hill roads (1915 Lake Seymour Drive) in Middletown.
"As a longtime resident of Delaware, I'm thrilled to bring the brand to the state and provide the community with a new concept that is unlike anything else out there," franchisee Kushal Patel said in a statement.
Patel hopes to open the restaurant in "the next week or two."
The restaurant's decor features images of surfboards and skateboards and neon green accents.

Founder and co-owner Paul Altero has described the concept as a sort of "utopia" or getaway from the druthers of many folks' day-to-day schedules. Altero and business partner Bill Hart started Bubbakoo's in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 2008 after moving together through the corporate ladder at Johnny Rockets, the burger chain styled as a 1950s diner.
Altero made up the word Bubbakoo's in college. "It's more of a name that represents a lifestyle, a utopia, more than anything else," he said in 2015.
That year, Altero and company had eight locations in New Jersey. They have since franchised, expanding Bubbakoo's to 16 states and more than 100 locations, mostly concentrated in the Northeast and Florida.

MIDDLETOWN – A Weis Markets grocery store will anchor a new commercial plaza north of Middletown in the Bayberry master-planned community.
Blenheim Group, the Newark-based residential and hotel developer that began work on the Village of Bayberry community that spans 1,500 acres on both sides of Boyds Corner Road back in 2010, made the announcement Wednesday morning.
The 64,000-square-foot Weis store, its fourth in Delaware, will anchor a new 280,000-square-foot Bayberry Town Center commercial plaza and feature a gas station. The mid-Atlantic food retailer already operates 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia. The Bayberry location is scheduled to open in 2025.
The town center is anticipated to break ground this fall and is poised to be the largest grocery-anchored center in the fast-growing Middletown-Odessa-Townsend (MOT) corridor in southern New Castle County, according to the developer. Although other tenants have not yet been announced, Blenheim aims to include a combination of grocery, upscale shopping, restaurants, services, banking and health care.
The center will also feature 31,000 square feet of office space, two green spaces for community programming, 145 townhomes and a connective artery to 3,400 homes in the rear of Bayberry’s northern community.
“It’s a significant milestone for us here at Bayberry to welcome Weis Markets and kickstart additional leasing activity at the future Bayberry Town Center, the final phase in our multi-year development of The Village of Bayberry master-planned community,” said Jay Sonecha, president of Blenheim Group, in a statement announcing the deal. “Located in one of Delaware’s fastest-growing residential areas, Bayberry Town Center will give local residents a new first-class grocery option, while also providing convenient access to quality goods and services and enjoyable dining and entertainment with family and friends. We look forward to naming more tenants in the coming months and breaking ground.”
The addition of Weis on Boyds Corner Road will be an answer to one of the biggest requests of MOT-area residents, who currently only have grocery options in downtown Middletown and few options for gas stations east of Route 896.
It also comes with a captive market in Bayberry, which features 1,700 sold homes and plans for another 1,000 homes in the coming years. Part of the community’s selling point has always been the addition of commercial tenants that would help insulate the needs of residents, but it’s taken more than a decade to reach the point of breaking ground.
