For many Americans, living with neuropathy is one of the greatest challenges they face. Present in about 8% of people around the world, neuropathy - or peripheral neuropathy, to be more accurate - can affect anybody. Approximately 10% of people over 40 years of age get neuropathy, as do 50% of diabetics and 20% of patients receiving cancer chemotherapy. In fact, the number of people with neuropathy is only increasing as diabetes becomes more common, the population ages and people with HIV/AIDS live longer.

Neuropathy 101

Peripheral neuropathy is a term used to describe nerve disorders that affect a specific part of your nervous system. There are several conditions that can lead to peripheral neuropathy, resulting in a variety of symptoms. The symptoms and the body parts affected by peripheral neuropathy depend on the underlying cause.

The Anatomy of Neuropathy

The nervous system in the human body is divided into two parts - the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system comprises the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral nervous system includes all other nerves present in the body. That includes those that travel from the spinal cord and brain to supply the face and other parts of the body.

Whenever there is any condition that affects the peripheral nerves, it is referred to as peripheral neuropathy. Healthcare providers often use the terms "neuropathy" and "polyneuropathy" interchangeably with "peripheral neuropathy." It is important to note that peripheral nerves, being the farthest from the central nervous system, tend to show the earliest and most severe effects of these conditions.

How Does Neuropathy Affect Your Body?

In order to comprehend the impact of peripheral neuropathy on your body, it's useful to have some knowledge about neurons - a crucial type of cell that forms your nerves. These neurons utilize electrical and chemical signals to transmit and relay messages throughout your nervous system. Each neuron in your body is made up of the following:

Cell Body

A cell body is the primary part of a cell.

Axon

An axon is a long, arm-like projection that extends from the cell body of a neuron. At the end of the axon, there are several finger-like extensions called synapses, which convert the electrical signal in the neuron into a chemical signal. These synapses then transmit the signal to other nearby nerve cells.

Dendrites

Dendrites are small, tree-like extensions on the cell body that receive chemical signals from nearby neurons' synapses.

Myelin

This is a protective covering made up of thin, fatty chemical compounds that surround the axon of many neurons.

The development of peripheral neuropathy and how long it takes depends on its underlying cause. If the cause is an injury, it can develop instantly or within a few hours. However, some forms of peripheral neuropathy caused by toxins or inflammation may develop rapidly over days or weeks. In contrast, most other conditions that cause peripheral neuropathy take months, years, or even decades to develop. Regardless of the cause, modern advances in medicine give patients hope for recovery, using doctors preferred treatment for neuropathy in legs and feet in Westover Hills, DE.

The Most Common Symptoms of Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy can manifest in a variety of ways. It has the potential to impact a single nerve, a group of related nerves, or numerous nerves in several areas of the body. The specific symptoms will vary based on which type of nerve signals are affected, and it is possible for multiple signal types to be involved.

Symptom types include the following:

  • Sensory and Pain
  • Motor
  • Autonomic

Curious what type of symptom you or a family member is suffering from? Let's take a closer look at each type of symptom below.

Motor Symptoms of Neuropathy

The peripheral nervous system in your body carries motor signals that originate in your brain and are sent to your muscles. These signals allow you to move around and carry out various physical activities. For your muscles to remain healthy and function properly, they require nerve connections to the brain. Some motor symptoms include:

 Neuropathy Clinic Westover Hills, DE

Atrophied Muscles

Nerve connection loss causes your muscles to weaken and shrink. With peripheral neuropathy, this happens most often in your lower legs, feet, and hands. Occasionally, patients will experience deformities in their hands and feet due to muscle loss.

 Neuropathy Doctor Westover Hills, DE

Muscle Paralysis and Weakness

Muscle weakening is a common issue caused by nerve deterioration from peripheral neuropathy. This condition can result in paralysis, making it difficult to move toes or causing foot drop and hand weakness. Additionally, it can also affect muscles in other areas of the body, such as the thighs and arms.

 Neuropathy Therapy Westover Hills, DE

Uncontrollable Movements

When nerves lose a connection to your brain because of your neuropathy, they can become hyperactive, resulting in uncontrolled muscle movements and cramps.

Autonomic Symptoms of Neuropathy

Did you know that your body has several processes that happen automatically without your conscious effort? These automatic functions are known as autonomic processes, and they include things like sweating, digestion, and blood pressure control. Autonomic nerve fibers are responsible for carrying signals for these automatic processes. However, disruptions in these signals can cause your body's automatic processes to malfunction. Some of these processes may work intermittently, while others may not work at all.

Some autonomic symptoms of neuropathy include:

Changes in Blood Pressure

Your body naturally regulates blood pressure, but damage to your peripheral nerves can cause sudden drops in blood pressure or increases in heart rate, especially upon standing up.

Neuropathy Treatment Westover Hills, DE

Bladder and Bowel Issues

Autonomic signals control bowel and bladder function involuntarily. Nerve fiber disruption from neuropathy may affect your ability to control your bladder and bowel movements.

 Neuropathy Clinic Westover Hills, DE

Issues with Sweating

Your body has a natural mechanism to regulate its internal temperature, which involves sweating to dissipate heat. However, if you suffer from peripheral nerve damage, it can disrupt this process and cause you to sweat excessively or not enough.

 Neuropathy Doctor Westover Hills, DE

Intimacy Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is a known symptom of neuropathy because your autonomic nervous system is in control of your sexual arousal.

Sensory Symptoms of Neuropathy

Your peripheral nerves are responsible for transmitting information about the outside world to your brain in the form of nerve signals. This information is then processed by your brain, allowing you to sense and perceive the world around you. However, when you have peripheral neuropathy, it can interfere with your ability to pick up sensory information or communicate it with your brain, leading to disruptions in your senses

 Neuropathy Therapy Westover Hills, DE

Numbness

This is one of the most common symptoms of neuropathy and is caused when your nerves can't relay or send signals properly, causing sensation loss.

Neuropathy Treatment Center Westover Hills, DE

Pain

Peripheral neuropathy can result in nerve damage that affects the way pain signals are sent, causing pain signals to be more intense (hyperalgesia) or triggered too easily (allodynia). It can even cause nerves to generate pain signals spontaneously, leading to what is known as "neuropathic" pain. Patients cite this as the most disruptive and challenging symptom of peripheral neuropathy.

Neuropathy Treatment Westover Hills, DE

Tingling

When your nerves can't carry signals to your brain properly, it can cause tingling. Think of it like radio static that you hear when you're losing a radio signal.

 Neuropathy Clinic Westover Hills, DE

Problems with Balance

Did you know that nerves help your brain keep track of where your hands and feet are? Even though you may not realize it, these sensations are crucial for your balance and coordination. If you lose these sensations, you might struggle with balance, especially in the dark, and have trouble using your hands.

Types of Diagnostic Testing Needed for Doctors Preferred Treatment for Neuropathy in Legs and Feet in Westover Hills, DE

Now that we've covered some of the most difficult symptoms to live with when you have neuropathy, you're probably wondering how Kennedy Health Clinic can help. Before recommending treatment, your neuropathy doctor will suggest one or more diagnostic tests for a full-body analysis. Doing so will help our team provide better neuropathy treatment for both short and long-term needs.

Diagnostic tests for neuropathy include:

Complimentary Thermoscan

During your initial complimentary consultation, our healthcare providers will conduct a free thermo scan, which is a diagnostic tool used to monitor foot temperature. This test is particularly useful in detecting warning signs of potential foot complications, especially for those with diabetic neuropathy who develop foot ulcers.

 Neuropathy Doctor Westover Hills, DE

Nerve Conductive Study

At Kennedy Health, we use a procedure called a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) to determine the speed of electric impulses traveling through your nerves. This diagnostic test aids in detecting any nerve damage and helps our neuropathy doctors administer appropriate treatment for nerve reactivation.

 Neuropathy Therapy Westover Hills, DE

Discover Poor Blood Flow Locations

Poor blood flow can cause nerve pain and damage. To find out exactly where the blockages or tears are, our providers use an ultrasound to map out the veins and arteries in your leg. This helps identify weak or strained areas and allows us to find the exact location of poor blood flow in your lower extremities.

Depending on the severity of your neuropathy, you may qualify for one or more of the tests above. Once our team has a better understanding of your conditions and symptoms, we can provide advanced treatment recommendations for your neuropathy.

Invest in Self-Care

Surrounding yourself with friends, family, and supportive people is essential for your well-being. Engage in activities that make you happy and bring you joy. Control What You're Able to Control

Reducing inflammatory foods can improve physical and mental health. Try decreasing or eliminating dairy, gluten, or products with sugar. If neuropathy is affecting day-to-day activities like sleeping, try making small changes. Adjustments like wearing thick socks can alleviate nerve pain and discomfort and help you sleep better. Also, try to establish a routine to focus on daily tasks and goals. Doing so can help you deal with and prevent depression and emotional distress. Last but not least, try to stay positive and hopeful. An effective treatment for your neuropathy might be closer than you imagine.

Talk About Your Feelings with Friends, Family, and Counselors

It's important to be honest with your loved ones about how you're feeling, both physically and emotionally. They can offer support, listen to you, and help you cope. You may also benefit from talking to a professional counselor for objective guidance on managing your physical pain. The biggest takeaway here is to express how you're feeling - don't bottle it up inside. It will only make your condition worse.

Original story:

San Antonio's salad options are growing with the additions of chains like Sweetgreen, Salad and Go, and Chicken Salad Chick. The latter has a Stone Oak spot in the works and is planning to add a Far Westside restaurant to the mix.

In June, plans were revealed for the first location of the national chain of southern-style chicken salad restaurants. The first restaurant at 22831 Highway 281 is "coming soon," according to an August update on the Facebook page. According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, a second location at 9610 State Highway 151, Suite 101, San Antonio, TX 78251, is also in the works.

Though filings are subject to change amid supply shortages and general contracting delays, the projected timeline for the $200,000 build out of the second restaurant is listed as October 15 to December 21.

Last October, the Atlanta-based business announced a deal to bring eight units to San Antonio, but site addresses were not revealed. A company news release published on June 22 confirms the second San Antonio location, but an address was not provided.

The upcoming Chicken Salad Chick joins Dave's Hot Chicken, another new chicken name to San Antonio, and Sprout's at Wender Plaza.

Once open, San Antonio customers will find fruity, savory, spicy, and traditional chicken salad mixes. The menu also includes side salads, mac and cheese, signatures sandwiches, and a "little chicks" menu for kids.

Stacy Brown started Chicken Salad Chick in 2008 in Alabama. The fast-casual restaurant chain now has more than 205 restaurants across 17 states. The chain is also planning an Austin expansion. Chicken Salad Chick says the Texas growth is supported by the traction the brand has made in other cities in the state like Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston.

Texas State Highway 151 stretches nearly 11 miles across San Antonio's Far Westside, providing a direct path between U.S. Highway 90 and Loop 1604, near Alamo Ranch. Often referred to as the Westover Hills area, Highway 151 encompasses much more than that, especially when you consider the growing dining scene developing along the route.

Some of the best restaurants in the city are located here, along with a heaping of exceptional eateries and unexpected chain restaurants, making Highway 151 one of the most interesting places to eat in San Antonio right now. With all this in mind, I've assembled this 151 guide for curious diners who are looking to explore their options off the highway.

Based on the food culture along 151, I've organized restaurants into three categories: unique restaurant brands, San Antonio-based chains, and one-of-a-kind local restaurants. If you're still with me, let's dive into the best places to eat along Texas State Highway 151 .

Unique restaurant brands

Let's start by digging into the chains that have made their way to San Antonio, planting at least one location along Highway 151. These are places that may not come off as chains upon first glance, but a quick online search will key you in to their franchise histories.

For starters, there's a handful of Asian-inspired chains that are far less common than the ubiquitous Panda Express. Consider Genghis Grill, where you can build your own Mongolian stir-fry and have a grill master whip it up for you on the spot. If you're up for some creative sushi rolls, try Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki, a modern Japanese restaurant hailing from South Texas. Taiwanese bubble tea franchise Gong Cha has a location off Highway 151, perfect for a quick pick-me-up or a little treat.

Then, there's the Southern food chains that are built around singular dishes, like Chicken Salad Chick or Dave's Hot Chicken, both of which opened locations in the same shopping strip along Highway 151 in the last year. In the same strip, Austin-based Torchy's Tacos opened a new spot in March.

Closer to the intersection of 151 and 410, you've got a spread of everything, like Willie's Grill & Icehouse, McAlister's Deli, and Dimassi's Mediterrenean Buffet, a Houston-based company that expanded in San Antonio last year.

San Antonio-based chains

Moving things more locally, there's plenty of homegrown San Antonio-based chains and restaurant companies that are well-represented along this stretch of highway, including the beloved Burger Boy, which has a location on Potranco right off the highway. Speaking of burgers, family-friendly Big'z Burger Joint has a location off 151, with giant burgers and an even bigger outdoor area perfect for a day out with the kiddos.

You can choose your own adventure at Ginza Ramen and Poke's 151 location, with its highly customizable ramen options and sushi-rritos. On the other side of 151, Stout House Potranco has a full calendar of daily specials to turn up the fun on any day of the week. Nearby, Thai Hut Restaurant, from the Pleansinchai family, offers all the noodles, curry, and fried rice you could ever want.

Las Palapas has much more than a dozen locations across San Antonio, but knowing there's one on Highway 151 is reassuring for customers looking for quick breakfast tacos or margaritas in the area. And I'd be remiss not to mention Mattenga's Pizzeria off Military Drive West, which serves Texas-sized specialty pizzas with quirky origin stories.

When in doubt, Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q is always an easy choice, regardless of San Antonio's polarized barbecue opinions.

One-of-a-kind local restaurants

Last, but definitely not least, we have the exceptional restaurants that you can't find any place other than Highway 151. These are the businesses that are absolutely worth the drive.

The Jerk Shack has been on every San Antonio foodie's radar, even before chef-owner Nicola Blaque earned a spot as a 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist earlier this year. This Caribbean restaurant, which moved to the Westover Hills area in 2022, serves some of the absolute best fried chicken in the city, not to mention a flavorful lineup of jerk chicken, masala fries, and an incredible mac and cheese.

Next door to The Jerk Shack, Sari-Sari Supper Club offers a modern presentation of traditional Filipino foods, like pancit canton and sinigang. A sequel concept to the original Sari-Sari on Wurzbach, this restaurant offers a dinner tasting menu on Fridays and Saturday, where customers can sample a curated selection of menu items. Some menu standouts include the porchetta and the mussels de Manila.

Other dining spots off 151 worth mentioning include Tex-Mex restaurant Grand Tequila, Viola's Ventanas of the Los Barrios family restaurants, and Cajun eatery Arcadiana Cafe, which isn't on 151 proper but I'd say it's close enough. As you can see, there's a little something for everyone along this 10.7-mile Texas state highway.

UPDATE: 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, January 16: Texans are staying put and warm indoors during the arctic blast breezing through the state. Despite freezing temperatures, one restaurant is sticking to its plans of holding a grand opening for its newest location in the Texas Hill Country.

Chicken Salad Chick will hold its grand opening on Wednesday, January 17, in New Braunfels. Staff at the location confirmed to MySA that the grand opening is still set for Wednesday.

The restaurant is a fast food chain that serves up a dozen varieties of chicken salads along with pimento cheese or egg salad, served by the scoop, sandwich, or bowl. Chicken salad can be paired with delicious sides, soups, and desserts.

At the launch, the go-to salad restaurant will kick off its opening with major giveaways. On opening day, prizes are designated for the first 100 customers to arrive at the location and purchase specific menu items.

Although the grand opening is Wednesday, giveaways last through the week as the first 50 guests each day through January 20 will receive various prizes.

Original story:

Chicken Salad Chick has a third San Antonio-area location set to open this January, with a major giveaway planned for the grand opening celebration. The third location is slated to host its grand opening on January 17 in New Braunfels. Fans of the food brand will be able to find the third spot in the Gruene Heights Center – and yes, it will have a drive-thru.

Less than a year after the only chicken salad fast-food chain opened its first spot in Stone Oak, Chicken Salad Chick has cemented itself as a go-to spot for salad lovers.

The New Braunfels location is actually the third spot of eight that South Texas Chicken Salad Chick owners James Oberg, Jeff Rochelle, and George Shaw intend to open in San Antonio and the surrounding areas.

Chicken Salad Chick's sweet treat for the first 100 guests

The first guest in line when the store opens at 10 a.m. will get one large Quick Chick of chicken salad per week for the year. The next 99 guests get the same large Quick Chick of chicken salad one per month for the year.

But wait, there's more. Giveaways continue until January 20. On January 18, the first 50 guests to purchase a Chick meal will receive a free Chicken Salad Chick stainless steel water bottle.

On January 19, the first 50 guests to purchase a Chick Trio will receive a free Chicken Salad Chick small cooler. Rounding out the giveaways on January 20, the first 50 guests to purchase a large Quick Chick will receive a free Chicken Salad Chick canvas tote. In other words, everyone's a winner.

A million TikTok users know Jerry Yguerabide for his approachable cooking tutorials. Later this month, about 40 people will have the chance to eat the food that made the San Antonio man a TikTok sensation. Yguerabide is the featured chef for Sari Sari Supper Club's June 26 dinner.

The last time we spoke to Yguearbide in March 2021, the TikTok culinary master had 600,000 followers and was prepping the idea of starting his own concept as an homage to his grandma. More than a year later, Yguerabide's following has grown to more than a million followers on TikTok alone, and his idea for his own business, Mesa de Magdalena, is just months out from opening.

Each month, the recently opened Sari Sari Supper Club, owned by husband and wife restaurateurs Adrian and Camille de Los Reyes, invites local chefs to take over their kitchen for one night. Guests who snag tickets meet the chef throughout the night, mingle with fellow diners, and enjoy a curated menu with drinks. Live entertainment is usually on the menu for the evening as well.

For Yguerabide's night, he will be serving a sneak peek of his upcoming food truck's offerings. He'll prepare the following six-course menu for guests: red pork tamales with green and red salsa with micro cilantro; chicken chicharron meatballs with crispy garlic and apple-guajillo glaze; braised pork belly with strawberry habanero coulis served with cherries stuffed with goat cheese; heirloom tomato crab salad with pickled peppers, cilantro lime ravagoat, and garlic chili oil; arroz con pollo, bomba rice, braised chicken, fried potatoes, tomatoes, and puffed sorghum chicken jus; and sweet corn flan topped with heirloom popcorn, carmel, and gold flakes.

Camille de Los Reyes says mariachi serenades will accentuate the evening.

Yguerabide is looking forward to sharing some of the flavors he's been teaching TikTok users with an in-person crowd.

"It will be a unique experience," he tells MySA. "For the very first time, people will get to taste a piece of Mesa de Magdalena. It's going to be a memorable night."

The food truck, named in honor of his grandmother, will be ready for a September grand opening, Yguerabide adds. He says he's starting small, but anticipates the concept growing into a "huge venture."

Tickets are $100 a person with the option to add a wine pairing for $30. Seats can be purchased online.

While Yguerabide's special night will bring Mexican-inspired fare to Sari Sari Supper Club, the SeaWorld-area concept serves Filipino food for lunch and dinner throughout the week. The De Los Reyes also recently launches a Saturday and Sunday brunch menu.

On June 1, the Friends of Wilmington Parks will host its 10th annual Jasper Crane Rose Garden Party, where you can see hundreds of roses at peak bloom. Party attendees include local leaders in business, politics, the arts, community organizations and philanthropy, as well as parks and garden lovers. Proceeds from the event fund family-friendly programming in Wilmington State Parks: Alapocas Run State Park, Brandywine Park, Kentmere Parkway, H. Fletcher Brown Park and Rockford Park.

“Our Rose Garden Party is one of the most beautiful in Wilmington and Brandywine Valley,” says Brenda Joy Good, executive director of Friends of Wilmington Parks. “With our roses in peak bloom, it’s a great time to gather with Wilmington’s most engaged citizens and parks-and-garden enthusiasts of all ages for an entertaining night. This year we reached out to build a team of volunteers to help prepare the rose beds, manicure the garden, and learn how to prune roses from Bruce Monroe, Delaware’s only master rosarian. Our garden looks the best it has in years, and we’re already seeing our first roses.”

Now a family event, the party includes activities and food for children and great food, live music, drinks and a silent auction for adults. Two antique horse carriages provide a once-a-year opportunity of a scenic carriage ride through Brandywine Park. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres by Penn Bistro, a team of the area’s youngest trained chefs from the innovative culinary program of William Penn High School.

In the 1930s, when Wilmington park commissioners wanted a rose garden in Brandywine Park, they sought the assistance of J. Horace McFarland, founder and first president of the American Rose Society. Laid out in 1933, the garden was a Public Works Administration project. Jasper Crane, a DuPont company director, donated the first 670 plants of 58 varieties, selecting plants that he had cultivated in his Westover Hills home’s garden. In the 1940s and 1950s, the Jasper Crane Rose Garden earned a reputation as one of the top public rose gardens in America. In 1952, The Garden Club of America honored Crane for achievement in the field of rose culture. In 2001, prompted by a gift from Jasper Crane’s descendants, the Friends of Wilmington Parks restored the Jasper Crane Rose Garden with 450 replacement plants. That same year, nationally recognized rose hybridizer J. Benjamin Williams donated the patented Jasper Crane rose. In 2015–2016, the Friends undertook another major renovation of the garden, adding more than 200 new rose bushes donated by Star Roses and Plants, in demonstration of their support for public gardens. For 25 years, Friends of Wilmington Parks has worked with the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation and the City of Wilmington to assist in the preservation, maintenance and programming of the Wilmington State Parks. Last year the Friends completed the restoration of the Sugar Bowl Pavilion at the foot of the Washington Street Bridge in Brandywine Park. The first Sugar Bowl Summer Concert Series, a seven-week program of live music and food trucks, will begin in July.
