If you want to understand how Margaret Thatcher shaped Britain, revisiting one particular 1980s soap opera is a great place to start. Brookside, a show set in a Liverpool cul-de-sac, ran for 21 years, airing just under 3,000 episodes between 1982 and 2003.

Brookside was therefore conceived amid the Thatcher administration’s first term, and a notable eight years of its broadcasting output coincided with her tenure.

The show is now being rebroadcast in full on digital channel STV. I’ve watched over 150 episodes so far, finding at the same time, a notable resource for social historians or indeed anyone interested in the contemporary impact and longer-term legacy of Thatcherism.

A distinctive location

Brookside Close, where the show was filmed, was not a TV set but part of a real private housing estate – at the time, Europe’s largest. To make Brookside, Mersey Television purchased a small corner of a flourishing development that saw around 1,000 new properties constructed over a seven year period in the 1980s.

The growing residential area typified the contemporary “new right” vision of aspirational home ownership.

According to the Thatcherite ideology of economic liberalism, such emerging estates would ideally produce a new generation of homeowners and, ultimately, Conservative-inclined voters. UK home-ownership increased during the 1980s and some areas with growing owner-occupation shifted towards the Conservatives at that time (particularly in the south east).

However, despite such private housing trends, there was a marked anti-Conservative swing in Liverpool’s six parliamentary seats between 1983 and 1987, considerably above the national average.

Riots had hit Liverpool’s Toxteth district in 1981 and were followed by allegations of government-driven managed decline. Meanwhile the city’s “Militant” city council was, by the mid-1980s, engaged in a high-profile ideological clash with Thatcher’s administration.

Brookside’s specific geographical location therefore provided a distinctive political edge and social barometer. It increasingly came to reflect the vibes of growing opposition to Thatcherism, which ultimately spread across the country as the decade progressed.

Fluid social status

Brookside featured class-based tensions that reflected the demographic change and social fluidity that emerged in the 1980s. Some recurring characters such as the Grant family represented the upwardly-mobile working classes – people who bought into housing developments like Brookside Close as part of the climb up the social ladder.

Meanwhile, families such as the Collins were part of a downwardly-mobile middle class. They represented the many people who had been forced to downsize and relocate as a result of money troubles brought on by the prolonged recession of the early 1980s.

There were also yuppies (the Huntingtons, who were younger and more affluent professional people with materialistic tendencies) and even characters from the very early computer technology generation (Alan Partridge, who worked from home before it was cool). The close also had black market wheeler dealers in Barry Grant and his associates, and houseproud neighbourhood busybodies (Harry Cross).

These character categories can be seen as illustrative of the times, particularly the shifting class dynamics and changing employment patterns fuelled by Thatcher’s policies. Most of the original families on the close were adapting to changes in the employment market, one way or another.

No such thing as society?

During the 1980s, Brookside increasingly featured a narrative of resistance towards Thatcherism. It was an outlook that stemmed from the leftwing politics of Brookside’s creator Phil Redmond and emerging writers like Jimmy McGovern.

Leftwing actors such as Ricky Tomlinson (who played Bobby Grant) further reflected this aura. Redmond lamented in 2021 that modern-day soap operas don’t “tackle the real social issues” in the same way they did in the 1980s.

The underlying anti-government sentiment could often be identified in Brookside’s dialogue. In mid-1983, for example, when Sheila Grant asked her husband Bobby “where would we be if we all thought about ourselves?”, he swiftly replied: “The Conservative party”.

But in their attempts to navigate their differences, the residents of Brookside Close challenged one of Thatcher’s most infamous assertions – that there is “no such thing as society … there are individual men and women and there are families”.

The sense of society and community that developed in the show’s plotlines would be one of its most popular traits, making it a ratings success by the middle of the decade.

Yet by the mid to late 1990s, the show went into decline following a relatively golden period of television popularity during the second half of the 1980s. There was perhaps less to rail against during the New Labour era. It could be argued that Brookside flourished while Thatcherism thrived.

To watch Brookside again in 2023 is to see Thatcher’s premiership both implicitly and explicitly reflected in contemporary everyday life. Characters from multiple families faced unemployment and there were even plotlines about strikes.

The struggle of meeting mortgage payments was ever present for residents on the close and tensions between generations and classes played out in often spectacular fashion.

Brookside thereby provides a human angle by which to analyse the impact of some of Thatcherism’s most high-profile policies during a monumental decade of cataclysmic political and social change.

FARMINGTON — The new water park being built in Farmington officially will be known as Bisti Bay at Brookside Park following a unanimous City Council decision made this morning.

The name for the park was originally Brookside Bay Water Park, but that changed after Mayor Nate Duckett visited the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area to film an episode of “The Mayor’s Table” about the local attraction.

The first of the episodes about the wilderness area was released this week and features the De-Na-Zin portion of the wilderness area.

Duckett said he was “really blown away by an area that is truly unique in the United States.”

After visiting the wilderness area, Duckett returned to the City Council and asked its members to reconsider the name that was proposed by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs committee earlier this year — Bisti Bay at Brookside Park.

Name could offer marketing opportunities

The new name is intended to help market and promote the water park in synergy with the nearby Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area.

Duckett mentioned a bill introduced last week that is sponsored by U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, to make it easier for outfitters to give guided tours on public lands, including wilderness areas like the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area.

He said he envisions working with a private outfitter in the future and offering tickets to go to the Bisti Bay at Brookside Park on one day and visit the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area the next.

Tourism official discusses importance of wilderness area

Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Tonya Stinson presented information about the importance of the wilderness area to tourism in Farmington.

Stinson said there are fewer Google search results for Bisti than for Brookside, and the results are almost all focused on the Farmington area. In contrast, the term Brookside yields more Google search results than Bisti and includes a chocolate company, as well as towns in Colorado, including Brookside Park in Durango.

The Bisti area includes geological features dating back to 60 to 85 million years ago when the region was a tropical to semi-tropical coastal swamp. It includes unique fossils that have only been found in this area. Stinson highlighted one particular fossil — the so-called "Bisti Beast," a close relative of Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Bisti Beast, which was discovered in 1998, is currently on display in Albuquerque.

The Bureau of Land Management monitors the number of vehicles that park in the parking lots to the wilderness area. More than 37,000 people visited the wilderness area in 2017, Duckett said.

The guest log for August at the trail head on the east side recorded visitors from all over the world, including the Netherlands, Germany and Austria, as well as throughout the United States, including Minneapolis, San Francisco and Boston, Duckett said.

Water park scheduled to open in 2019

The water park is currently under construction and will take the place of the former Brookside Pool, which closed in 2016 due to health and safety concerns. The city of Farmington plans to open the water park at the end of May.

"The super-rich people find comfort in a country with a stable taxation policy, currency, and a growing economy. The current administration's progress is changing tax policy rapidly, mismanaging the currency and weakening economic growth," Kamau expounded.

Kamau noted the implementation of the Finance Act, which introduced a raft of taxes, including the doubling of Valued Added Tax (VAT) on fuel, will work against the government.

"The taxes will end up hurting the tax base. Foreigners will exit and invest in other countries. By the time we realise that tax revenues are lower and go for the eventual repealing, the tax base will have shrunk," he said.

In a tweet shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, June 21, the businessman criticised the Kenya Kwanza Alliance government for imposing too many taxes on Kenyans.

"We had a total of 440 agent territories, of which 50 were inactive. Making a net of 390, of these 130 were performing below expectation and were rationalised. The 130 left in the last 45 days...from the start of May. They were inactive. We had to part ways with them," Njonjo said as reported by Business Daily.

On Monday, August 21, Twiga Foods announced a fresh round of employee layoffs to cut operational costs.

The e-commerce food distribution firm said the tough economic environment affected people's purchasing power.

3. Copia lays off over 300 employees

In August, Kenyan e-commerce start-up Copia announced the dismissal of over 300 employees. The company cited tough economic conditions.

According to Tech Trends, the company explained it was restructuring to stay afloat.

"Copia is optimising some key processes in its operations in Kenya to provide a better service to its customers and to drive sustained operating profitability," it stated.

British company De La Rue cut down operations in January as market demands slowed.

The multinational firm cut about 300 jobs by March 2023 following reduced orders from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

The firm revealed that CBK had not placed any order and does not expect it for the next 12 months.

Fans of the Merseyside soap opera Brookside are celebrating after Liverpool's most famous close was returned to it's former glory following years of neglect.

Brookside close, the cul-de-sac in which the day to day scouse drama was played out for 21 years, had been left to fall into disrepair after the show's 2003 cancellation.

But a campaign by Brookside fanatics coupled with the long awaited arrival of some real life residents in the close has seen the one time set receive a much needed makeover.

Now, with the famous street sign back in place and the suburban Liverpool houses occupied, 'Brookie' fans are said to be thrilled by the restoration.

The road sign marking the famous street had fallen away from its posts and the plants surrounding the patio which once hid the body of Trevor Jordache were in desperate need of attention.

The 13 properties that make up the street in West Derby have been spruced up with new brickwork, new timber, staircases, plumbing and wiring.

The close was sold to an anonymous purchaser at auction in December 2008 having spent years lying vacant after the previous developer, who bought the set from Mersey Television in 2005, went into administration.

Lee Brady is the organiser of the campaign to see the soap immortalised on DVD for fans to cherish.

He said he was 'thrilled' to see the close looking like it did during the soaps heyday in the 1980's.

He said: 'I'm just thrilled that Brookside Close is now looking its former self.

'After the close looking so sad, wet and neglected for the last six years it looks all fresh again. Sadly, this time it's not going to make a return to TV with it being lived in by residents.

'I think its a massive part of Liverpool television history and to see it the way it had been allowed to deteriorate made a lot of fans, including myself, fear it could be demolished. '

The once pristine cul-de-sac was the scene of significant television moments including the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss.

The story of the residents of Brookside Close was devised by Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond and first screened on Channel 4's launch night in November 1982.

The show, which ran for 21 years, kick-started the careers of stars like Anna Friel, Ricky Tomlinson, Amanda Burton and Claire Sweeney.

It pioneered the sexy and dramatic storylines which now dominate British soaps, breaking television taboos on incest, lesbianism and domestic violence.

But from a high of eight million viewers, it fell to one million, and TV bosses found it hard to justify the £16million a year the soap costs to make.

The final episode was watched by close to 2 million viewers.

Channel 4 are said to be working on a Brookside Special Anniversary DVD for next year which could have a release date of around November 2012, 30 years to the month after the Liverpool soap was born.

An all-inclusive waterplay area soon will be built next to De Soto’s all-inclusive playground at the De Soto Athletic Complex off Vineland School Road south of downtown.

The De Soto City Council voted 5-0 Monday night, March 21, to award a $567,961 contract to Brookside Contracting of the De Soto area to build the waterplay area.

The company submitted the only bid for the project.

It was the second time the city of De Soto solicited bids for the project.

“The city did not receive any proposals the first time this project was put out for bids, but as soon as Pat Downs and Brookside Contracting were made aware of this project, they knew it was a perfect fit,” City Manager Todd Melkus said. “The city is excited to have Brookside working on this project because they are a local contractor and are well known for their natural water feature designs.”

Melkus said the waterplay area will include many features to entertain youngsters and will adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

“This is not an out-of-the-box splash pad that is just a large concrete pad with water geysers in it,” Melkus said. “This will include a natural looking array of water features, including boulders, geysers, small streams, topography changes, stone steps, etc. This will allow children of all ages and abilities to enjoy the natural aspects of the waterplay area which will have ADA access and sensory items, as well.”

He said city officials hope the waterplay area will be completed this summer.

“We are looking at starting construction in six weeks or less, and our goal is to have it completed towards the end of summer,” he said. “Material delays, etc. make timelines very difficult these days so we will be open to working with the contractor on this project.”

Councilman Jim Akers said the waterplay area should appeal to families inside and outside the De Soto.

“We feel like it’s something that’s needed for the kids,” Akers said. “It also may draw people to De Soto.”

Melkus said the city will pay for the facility with revenue from a 1/2-cent park and stormwater sales tax voters approved in 2018.
