Who will be the Miami Dolphins' starting running back today? What about for the Indianapolis Colts?

Dolphins star running back De'Von Achane left their last game vs. the New England Patriots with a concussion. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been out since Week 2 with the same injury.

Meanwhile, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has been battling a high ankle sprain for the past few weeks. His backup, Trey Sermon, also has been dealing with a knee injury.

Here's what we know about the Dolphins' and Colts' injuries:

Is De'Von Achane playing today?

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that he was optimistic on Achane's availability. The second-year running back out of Texas A&M said after practice that he has final medical approval to play, having cleared concussion protocols.

Achane practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday. Achane would join Raheem Mostert and Jaylen Wright in a loaded running back room.

Achane had to leave in the first quarter against the Patriots, but he had two weeks to clear the NFL's concussion protocol thanks to the Dolphins' bye week. He leads Miami with 56 carries for 183 yards and a touchdown, while adding 21 receptions (tied for second on the team) for 186 yards and another score.

Miami Dolphins depth chart

Here's a look at the running backs on the Dolphins roster, along with their injury status:

Is Jonathan Taylor playing today?

Taylor was ruled out Friday. This will be the third straight game the All-Pro running back has missed. He is 16th in the NFL with 349 rushing yards entering today's games.

Taylor suffered the injury late in the Colts' Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. A high ankle sprain typically has a four- to six-week recovery time, meaning Taylor could realistically return next week at the Houston Texans.

Colts backup running back Trey Sermon also is battling a knee injury, but he practiced Thursday with a full session Friday. If he can't go, former Dolphins running back Salvon Ahmed would likely be elevated to the active squad to share duties with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull.

Here's a look at the running backs on the Colts roster, along with their injury status:

Is Tua Tagovailoa playing today?

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve after the Dolphins' Week 2 game vs. the Buffalo Bills. The move makes him ineligible to play in the team's next four games, and today is the fourth game since his concussion.

Tagovailoa could be eligible to play next week vs. the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Mike McDaniel said he expects Tagovailoa to return this season, and if all goes to plan, he could return to practice this week. A report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini and Tess DeMeyer confirmed that Tagovailoa is expected to practice Wednesday and play in Week 8.

Until then, Tyler Huntley will remain the Dolphins' starting QB with Skylar Thompson as his backup. Thompson is listed as questionable with a rib injury, but he practiced in full all week.
