The workshop helped raise awareness of how much (77%?) of Newark's residential areas are zoned strictly for single-family housing only, typically with large lot sizes, and how this severely restricts the housing supply and drives up housing prices for everyone, and how it also forces car-dependency, which itself raises the cost-of-living. It's frustrating for me, someone who has suffered from the difficulty of finding housing in the walkable town center of Newark every time I have looked for apartments and recently when we bought a house. I'm starting to see how the struggles I had are a direct result of the restrictive zoning. I am really excited and optimistic that the city of Newark has become aware of these problems and is adopting a new mindset. I am eager to talk to others about this and I hope to get more people here on board with these ideas. There is often some pushback or resistance to attempts to relax zoning, minimum parking requirements, or streamline project approval, so I am hoping to start sharing ideas that will help address people's concerns. It was so reassuring to me to see that the city was already doing this of their own initiative. The other people who attended the workshop were also enthusiastic about the core ideas and offered some useful feedback about which ideas or approaches were better than others. I was also optimistic to see more people supported the "small government" approach, of relaxing zoning, and people were more opposed to ideas that involved more bureaucracy, administrative costs, and spending.Oaklands/Nottingham ManorNeighbor0d ago
