Tennis Canada has partnered with Canadian Traffic Network ULC (CTN) and Skyworx Drone Shows (Skyworx) to help launch the festivities of this year’s National Bank Open presented by Rogers in style with two epic drone shows

Taking place in Montreal on Sunday, July 30 and in Toronto on Friday, August 4, fans will be able to Feel Tennis as they watch 500 synchronized drones light up the night’s sky.

CTN and Skyworx’s team of world-class engineers, pilots and artists have created numerous immersive and breathtaking shows across the world, including at the 2023 Australian Open and at Fenway Park. The drones will create a mesmerizing light show in the sky that will continually evolve to project various shapes and animations, with themes related to tennis and the National Bank Open.

Opting to have a drone show closely aligns with Tennis Canada’s goal of embracing innovation ahead of the 2023 National Bank Open, highlighting several new and exciting initiatives. As opposed to traditional firework displays that have become common practice over the years, drone shows offer a refreshing, eco-friendly alternative that ultimately helps achieve the same goal. Plus, there have been limited drone shows done in Canada at this scale, making this one of the largest shows the country has ever seen.

In Montreal, fans will be able to watch the 12-minute show from the Old Port, where it will begin between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. In Toronto, fans are encouraged to gather at Woodbine Park and/or Woodbine Beach in order to best take in the 12-minute show, that will start between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. The NBO social channels will provide an exact time within 24 hours of the show.

“With this drone show, the sky is literally becoming a new channel for us, accessible for anybody to watch and a one-of-a-kind experience that tennis fans in Canada have yet to witness,” said Anne Belliveau, Tennis Canada’s Senior Vice-President and Chief Revenue & Marketing Officer. “With this technology, we are able to bring our sport and our event outside the stadiums, pushing our NBO fan experience to new heights while engaging and entertaining existing and new audiences.”

“Capturing breathtaking visuals, this spectacle will also help create plenty of visibility for the cities of Montreal and Toronto, as the content that will be circulated will showcase spectacular shots of our beautiful cities to people around the world,” added Belliveau.

The drone shows join Tennis Canada’s inaugural Virtual Reality Tennis Tournament presented by motorola razr, its revamped Fan Reward program via the National Bank Open mobile application, and a VR Watch station at this year’s tournaments.

“Beyond having great tennis played on the courts, one of our main goals this year is to enhance the fan experience from start to finish,” said Valérie Tétreault, Tournament Director of the National Bank Open in Montréal. “This drone show plays an important role in accomplishing that, helping kick off what we are expecting to be a fantastic tournament this year in a special, unique way.”

“One of the great things about this drone show is that when it’s over, it’s not really finished,” said Karl Hale, Tournament Director of the National Bank Open in Toronto. “Part of the fun will be seeing and engaging with the fantastic content that will be produced both by our team but also by the fans in attendance.”

Shortly after the drone show concludes, official footage will be made available to the media to utilize.

This year, the WTA Tour will be in Montreal at IGA Stadium for the National Bank Open from August 4 to 13 while the ATP will be in Toronto at Sobeys Stadium from August 5 to 13. Both events recently revealed star-studded player lists (Montreal, Toronto) with this year’s tournaments set to feature the best in tennis. Limited tickets are still available for purchase for Montreal and Toronto.

Woodbine, Iowa --

In just a few weeks’ time, Iowa National Guard Airmen recently stood up a giant Tension Fabric Structure that is a precursor to an Innovative Readiness Training mission taking place at the Woodbine, Iowa High School in the coming months.

The fabric structure will initially house teams of U.S. military members traveling to the area to help construct a new IGNITE Pathways building already under construction in Woodbine.

Woodbine School Superintendent Justin Wagner requested the support of the Department of Defense IRT program to help construct the new IGNITE building as well as the accompanying TFS structure.

“We are so pleased and blessed that we were awarded this, and that we will have DOD members here to help us build this thing out,” Wagner said.

Wagner said he became aware of the IRT program because of his long-time affiliation with the Air National Guard. Colonel Wagner also serves as the Vice Wing Commander with the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City as a traditional guard member.

According to Wagner this is the first ever IRT project taking place in Iowa. The federally funded IRT program was created in the 1990s with the goal of combining military training with civic involvement. The program allows U.S. military members to hone job related skills in a domestic setting, while at the same time providing key services to American communities.

Wagner said the process of requesting IRT support was nearly two years in the making. He said the request process drills down into project specifics like requesting HVAC, electrical, plumbing, concrete work and so on.

“Folks from the DOD that have specific expertise and want that training can come out and do that kind of work on an IRT project,” Wagner explained.

As part of their annual training, Iowa Guard members from the 185th ARW set up the privately donated 30,000 square foot TFS structure in Woodbine this fall. The building project is familiar to the Civil Engineers because it is the same type of building that is used widely by the U.S. military around the world.

Because TFS buildings are prefabricated the buildings can be set up relatively quickly. In military applications the design also allows the structure to be disassembled and moved if necessary.

Secluded in the Iowa’s Luss hills about 30 miles north of Omaha, Neb., IRT teams arriving in the western Iowa hamlet should have plenty of elbow room during their stay in the huge fabric building.

Wagner said that when construction on the adjacent IGNITE building is complete, the school plans to use the TFS building as in indoor athletic facility.

Woodbine Community School district plans to begin hosting IRT members soon, with the IGNITE building project scheduled to be complete at the beginning of the 2023 school year.

Woodbine horse people are always ready to go to bat for a good cause, especially when it's for one of their own.

​Fellow jockeys, exercise riders, trainers, owners, grooms and several other members of the Woodbine horse racing community will come together on Monday, June 20, for the 'Backstretch Baseball Tournament' at Paul Coffey Park in Malton to raise money for jockey Sheena Ryan, who suffered serious injuries in a morning training accident in the backstretch in early May, injuries that required major surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital.

​The event, which includes six teams playing in the tournament, a $5 BBQ lunch, free ice cream truck, DJ Fabulous, a silent auction, and a 50/50 draw, is open to the public. The first game is at 11:30 a.m. with the championship at 4:00 p.m.

​“We'd love to see people come out to see the jockeys in a much different way than they're used to seeing them,” said jockey agent Neal Wilson. “We have a large picnic area and plenty of great things for families to enjoy. It's going to be a great day and we encourage everyone to come out and join in the fun.”

​The Woodbine racing community has banded together to raise funds for the popular rider, who was getting back on horses after suffering a concussion last fall. A GoFundMe (www.gofundme.com/f/help-injured-exercise-rider-may-rivas-in-recovery) was organized by fellow jockey and close friend, Isabelle Wenc.

​“She has a very long road to recovery, and I know times are tough for everyone, but any little donation would be greatly appreciated,” Wenc wrote on the GoFundMe page, which has brought in over $15,000 in donations to date.

​Josie De Paulo, one of the organizers of the baseball tournament, and assistant trainer to her husband, Mike De Paulo, is grateful for the many who have stepped up to help Ryan.

​“So many people have come together to help out Sheena. It's not surprising, but it's wonderful to see. This business has given us a great life and it's important to support each other. When Daren Gomez [Executive Director, Jockeys' Benefit Association of Canada] came to me, I had a lot of experience in helping to assist with these types of fundraisers. I had helped organize a fundraiser for Lanscott Fray, who was paralyzed after a morning training accident. So, when Daren came to talk with me, I was only too happy to help.”

​Mike De Paulo, who has 926 career wins, reached out to several horsepeople to ask if they would support the cause.

​All of them did.

​“It's a competitive business, but it's a family back there,” he noted. “There are a lot of people you know and although Sheena didn't ride for us, she is part of that family. We have a bunch of TVs donated from people and one of my owners, Robert Marzilli, paid for an ice cream truck. It's been great to see everyone band together to want to help.”

​Gomez, nephew of the late Hall of Fame rider Avelino Gomez, echoed De Paulo's thoughts.

​“Well, simply put, we are a racing community and when someone gets hurt, we should help. I might also add, happy to help. ​It makes you feel good and proud to be part of something so strong. Simply put, Sheena is an integral part of our community, very happy, a positive attitude and loves the horses.”

​Ryan, Canada's Sovereign Award-winning apprentice in 2014, took to social media to share her gratitude for the outpouring of support.

​The lifetime winner of 197 races, including five stakes victories, will be on-hand for the tournament.

​“Huge thank you to Josie De Paulo, Neal Wilson and [Woodbine's grounds manager] Wendy McLaren for putting this together!

“​It's going to be a fun day – good for everyone to get out and play some softball! I will be there and I'm excited to see everyone!”

​As for the tournament itself, expect the competitive side of horsepeople to come out ahead of the first pitch.

​“I can't wait to see it,” said Josie De Paulo. “This is fun competition. When you're racing, you could be racing against family members, and you are all competing to win. There could be times when you feel guilty if you nose out someone you're close with, but for something like this, you love it if you beat them.”

After bombarding residents of a southwest cul-de-sac with parking tickets while they slept, Calgary’s transportation boss says the parking authority is eyeing “different tactics.”

Last month, homeowners who live on Woodmont Green S.W. awoke to find parking tickets tucked under the windshield wipers of 25 vehicles, imposing fines between $40-$70 for angle parking instead of parallel parking in the cul-de-sac where residents say space for vehicles is at a premium.

Southeast Coun. Andre Chabot told council Monday he’s heard from dozens of his constituents living on cul-de-sacs since the Woodbine blitz, all telling a similar story.

Chabot said some other residents in his ward were also ticketed for parking for longer than 72 hours without the benefit of a warning, something he believes may get the message across to residents without hitting them with fines.

“It’s been all over. Almost every one of my communities has been hit, including late at night,” Chabot said.

“I’m hoping we can look at the rules around angled parking in cul-de-sacs and I’d like to see some exclusions where it doesn’t make sense.”

Dorothy Buller, who lives in an oddly shaped cul-de-sac in Huntington Hills, said her street has seen the presence of parking officers for the first time in the 11 years she’s lived there, ticketing cars that weren’t following the letter of the law.

“Where we live it’s virtually impossible to park like that without blocking people from the street,” the 63-year-old said.

“It really isn’t rocket science. It’s just the dumbest thing ever.”

Mac Logan, the city’s general manager of transportation, said the Woodbine ticket blitz was recently addressed at a Calgary Parking Authority’s meeting, adding the agency’s brass is looking at ways to ensure communities aren’t blindsided with a pricey lesson in sometimes arcane parking bylaws.

“The bottom line is it’s about working with the community,” Logan said, adding that in the case of the Woodbine blitz, the tickets were issued following a single complaint from a resident.

“The message has been received loud and clear and we’re working with the board to look at different tactics.”

Logan said in the past the parking authority had used informational door hangers to remind residents about the rules but noted that tactic “hasn’t been particularly effective.”

“We don’t have a formal warning type of mechanism,” he said.

Parking authority general manager Mike Derbyshire wasn’t available for comment Monday, instead offering a statement that parking supervisors will be consulted in the future when necessary.

“Prior to enforcing these types of infractions, an on-duty CPA supervisor will be consulted as to the appropriateness of the particular enforcement action, taking into account safety related issues, time of day, number of infractions, and other considerations where discretion may be required,” he said.

The 4-year-old daughter of Animal Kingdom made one previous start at Woodbine in Aug. 13 Trillium Stakes (G3), where, after a troubled trip, she circled the field to claim third at odds of 22-1 under Antonio Gallardo.

Saturday, Gallardo moved the filly from last into striking contention down the backside, and out of harm’s way as the field swung for home.

Closely tracking a pace of :23.96, :48.39, and 1:11.57, even-money favorite Our Flash Drive , returning to the Woodbine synthetic main track for the first time since capturing the 2021 Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3) as a 3-year-old, seized command at the top of the lane.

The Mark Casse trainee appeared a winner until Gallardo and Kate’s Kingdom, who had launched their bid just behind Our Flash Drive, found a second wind at the eighth pole, collaring the leader in the final strides before the wire.

Kate’s Kingdom ($18.40) hit the wire in a time of 1:41.94. Our Flash Drive was a half-length behind in second with Casse stablemate Broadway Lady completing the trifecta.
